The Kaukari Park is part of the Copiapó River Urban Recovery Plan promoted by MINVU Atacama and aims to revitalize the image of the city, recovering and integrating this space into the urban fabric
The Kaukari Park of Copiapó receives the Urban Contribution Award for the Best Community Scale Public Space Project and we are very happy to be part of this project, together with the architect Teodoro Fernández, 2014 national architecture award.
Designed in 4 stages – of which 2 are built -, it aims to recover 160 hectares for the city, greatly reducing the lack of green areas in the county, placing it at 3.7 m2 per inhabitant. It functions as an urban link that connects the Palomar sector with the city center. It’s always open and accessible from the main avenues or cross streets, and the project does not contain perimeter fences.
The park seeks to integrate into the river’s landscape, highlighting the sinuous lines and imitating its natural course, as part of the river’s recovery strategy.
It aims to reduce the visual and environmental impact by maintaining the simplicity of the materials and harmony with the desert environment.
In this lighting project we were focused on avoiding the emission of light towards the sky, carefully complying with Decree 43 and thus reducing the effects of light pollution and caring for biodiversity.
Conceptually, lighting declines on a slope from the most illuminated areas with the highest traffic adjoining the city, to the most natural areas near the river bed in which electric lighting is not contemplated to protect biodiversity and to avoid adverse effects in case of possible flooding of the Copiapó river.
Together with the architects, spaces for nocturnal activity were created so that the lighting is integrated into the natural elements of the landscaping project.
