Award of Merit IES Illumination

The work ¨Su vertical nos Retains¨ has been awarded the IES Illumination Award of Merit for its meritorious contribution to lighting design.

“Su vertical nos Retiene”, an installation art piece by Fernando Prats created in association with architects Elton Leniz and Cruz Mandiola, won the IES Award of Merit for its contribution to lighting design.

The IES Illumination Awards recognize and acknowledge nominees and award winners for their professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design, focusing on the individual merit of each project in contention for the award. All projects were assessed and judged by a panel of wide-ranging professional experts with deep knowledge of lighting design.

The Project itself is built on the artist’s observation of the Andes mountains, Gabriela Mistral’s posthumous “Poema de Chile”, and the drawings in the Atlas of Physical Geography of Chile drawn by the geologist Pedro José Amado Pissis in 1875.

Our approach was to try and magnify the sculpture taking into account the context in and surrounding the UN COP25 summit on climate change. Issues such as sustainability, respect for biodiversity and saving the night sky were given special emphasis, themes that are an established part of our core design principals.

Our goal was to outline the art piece while paying the utmost respect to materiality and detailing on the columns. We also designed the lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere for those visiting the art piece, while ensuring the absence of light pollution, and bringing down energy consumption to minimum levels.

But don’t take our word for, click here to see the making of the installation on vimeo.
